Heaven...

What a great "getaway from it all" we had last weekend! It has been 3 years since Anke & I first went to Karratha & stayed with some friends & went camping "out bush". This year Anke had to go up there again for 2 weeks with her study on Pneumococcal diseases in the communities... and after a few pleading email to my friends who live up there, I flew up & joined Anke & they graciously let us stay on with them for an extra few days.

There is something incredibly "real" and grounding about being in the outback... we could walk around looking at rocks & plants with nobody else for hundreds of kilometres... literally. The scenery... the countryside ~ largely unchanged for hundreds (or even thousands!) of years... the red dirt... (no mobile phone reception!). It was just stunning & so relaxing.

This time we also managed to have some bush tucker and enjoyed a beautiful freshly cooked kangaroo stew with damper cooked in a camp oven over an open fire... it was just fantastic. The stars were amazing and the silence was incredible... we could have stayed for so much longer. We felt very fortunate.

The old car is an old Austin 4WD which used to belong Camis & Angus father... it got irretrievably bogged there in the Fortescue River basin over 40 years ago & is STILL there ~ AND the bonnet still opens & closes! Surreal... & very special. We can't wait to go again.
